Tropical weather, rich indigenous culture and national parks are headline acts in themselves, but Darwin adds in brilliant sunsets, world-class fishing and a colourful calendar of events.

Darwin’s the modern and multicultural tropical capital of this wonderfully vast region where much is remote, yet easy to access. World Heritage-listed Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks provide an exciting antidote to hectic urban lives – zebra crossings are well and truly gazumped by waterside signs warning of crocodiles. Hop from galleries, museums and markets to the national parks and Tiwi Islands; just don’t forget to take an ice-cold beer with you.

Miranda Krestovnikoff is a British radio and TV presenter specialising in nature. She is a qualified scuba diver, a wandering gourmet and an accomplished musician. We sent her to Darwin to report back on her adventures; you can watch her video from Darwin above.

Miranda says: ‘I took a helicopter ride from Darwin with Airborne Solutions to get out to the immense billabongs. Here, local guide David Walker (from Out There NT) took me on his airboat for a white-knuckle ride through the wetlands that lie between the Mary River and the Adelaide River. It was great chatting with David, whose knowledge of the area is as vast as the billabongs themselves – not surprisingly, as he has grown up here around the crocodiles. He knew exactly where to look in this landscape and promised me we’d get to see a saltie. It took an hour or so before we found the tracks of a huge male in the mud, but there was no sign of him. On the way back to base, the water rippled and just ahead of us was a young female, just hanging in the water – so that was it, I saw my first saltie!’
